Snelling (p.83) also noted the many flood legends among various peoples. Some of the earliest flood stories are on clay tablets dated 1880-2100 BC. The Gilgamesh legend from the Babylonians has marked similarities to the Genesis account. When one reads some of these legends as in Tigay(p.4-5) it was noted that a mythical legend was notably different than the more factual Bible version. For example the Bible gives dimensions, number of days of waiting, sending out a bird to test for vegetation, and final docking and unloading. On the other hand, the Gilgamesh Epic is about a king who is 2/3 divine and survived the flood and seeks immortality by eating a plant on the bottom of the sea. However, the plant was snatched by the serpent. It is polytheistic with mention of other Gods, and an imaginative story. For example, he slays the Bull of heaven (a star formation). He also bemoans the fall of certain game implements into the neverworld. It is possible such legends were made to venerate the king and not to tell history (Snelling p.87). He suggests that a there were written records on the ark of the genealogies that were passed down through Noah. After the dispersion of the peoples at Babel, the following flood stories became distorted by the many groups who were pagan. After the language confusion, it took many years for languages to develop again to the point of being written, resulting in the so called Dark ages (Snelling p 289). Cooper noted (p.17) much of Egyptian history going back to 1000BC held as the view of God as the creator. The sons of Ham settled Egypt after the flood by several sons who were named Cush, Put and Egypt “Mizraim” (Holman Study Bible p.13). Mizraim was also known as Menes and formed the city of Memphis on the Nile.(Beechick p.138). Menes was the first king of Egypt (web 45). Possible distortion and adding years to the Manetho king list in Egypt may have occurred making history there appear longer than it was(James p.220). Relevant archeological evidence supports the biblical chronology from Abraham onwards (Snelling p.289). Beechick(p.146) also asserts that Shem finished the genealogical records after Noah’s death. Shem met Abraham in Ur and gave him the old genealogical records in the language of Edenese and taught him some about astrology. Shem also knew of Job who lived in the land of Uz(Beechick p.143). Job lived in the post flood period and has some details on the ice age that followed the flood in his area (Job 37:9-10) (Snelling p 289). Also see the history section.
